Hey guy's, I'm in the process of building/modifying a boat trailer. Right now it is a single axle trailer, but I'm going to add on a second axle. My question is do I have to link the two axles together ( leaf springs)? I aways see on tandem trailers the front of the rear spring is linked to the rear of the front spring.
In my case it would be alot easier to just add another stand alone axle forward of the rear axle. Do you guy's see anything wrong with this?? I don't see how it'd be dangerous, maybe it would handle different?
Thanks _Chris..

I think that's mainly done to save costs. That way there's only 4 spring mounts and 2 springs instead of twice as many of each.
It'll probably handle better your way, especially on rough terrain. (I'm just guessing here)

Well there is still 4 springs, they just link all 4 together. The middle black part swivels here's a pic.. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.pontoonstuff.com/img_large/tandem-axle-pontoon.jpg)

Looking at it I think it would help spread the load over both axles if on uneven terain. Such as going up a curb. If the front axle were to hit it would allow the rear axle to be pushed down to the ground. Where if it did not have the leveragy rocker thingy when the front axle went up the curb it would take all the weight while the rear axle floated in the air for a moment.

But that is just a guess my trailer is set up the same way. I have even seen many big trucks set up like that.

Tag's pretty much nailed it. It distributes the load better.
The linkage in the middle is called an equalizer. They're not expensive, and not very hard to implement. If you're going through the hassle of building a tandem, there's little reason to do it differently.
Why is it that you think you need tandem?

Cool thanks guy's. The main reason for wanting to do it separeate is that If I do the standard setup I'll have to cut off the leaf mounts I have on there now. They won't work with the standard tandem setup. I guess you guy's are right, I'm going to be welding on the front axle mounts anyway, I guess I should just redo all of it.
Thanks again _Chris..

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can just add a second axle in front of the current one. I think you will have to move the current axle back when you add the second axle to maintain load stability.
