I rolled the Mighty Red Chili. Not so mighty when encountering solid sandstone. No worries, the investment in Traveller's Insurance is proving to be VERY worthwhile (intentional plug!).

This will be a major rebuild. As in new body.

So I need to replace the wheels, and want to go 2.25" or so BS Champion Beadlocks for a slightly wider stance. This means exposed tires unless I change the front fenders, several fiberglass options there.

But what about the rear? The body guy is quite good at enlarged wheel openings on early 4Runners, but doesn't have a lot of ideas for flares or increased tire covering. What works, that would allow a slightly larger wheel opening?

I posted in Moomba's thread (always admired the banana Runner, Moomba!) and the cutout flares are an option, but they won't work so well with a larger wheel opening. The advantage would be replacability in event of damage. But I don't clear chains so well, so a larger wheel opening is kinda needed.

Pics or BAND! You okay?

Maybe the icelandic flares from Billa-Bud-Buena (SP?) in Iceland? They are steel, made for larger openings, etc.

After I cut out and re-seal the rear wheel wells, I'll be installing some generic 3" rubber fender flares on my '85. They have a stiffening wire in the outer lip and just screw onto the wheel well.

I'm OK. It was pretty disastrous, but drove back from Moab to Denver.

Are the Icelandic flares made of unobtainium?

Roger's idea is the fallback. Just doesn't meet my aesthetic sensibilities... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Short of the icelandic version, I'm not sure you have many/any options for flares for wider openings (besides the bushwacker cut-outs). Of the icelandic versions I've seen, it's always been FZJ-80 or FJ-80 land cruisers. Bushwacker only makes the extend-a-fender flares (standard flares) and cutouts for the 1984-1989 4Runner body style. Warn used to make a standard flare almost identicle to the extend-a-fender flares, but I don't know if Warn still makes them (I own a set). Regardless, the Warn flares are for a standard wheel well. Toyotafiberglass.com makes fiberglass sides with a flare built right in it. There's a recent thread on here showing pics, though I'm sure you've already seen it. If you or your bodyman are crafty at making molds, you could try making your own custom flares out of fiberglass (or metal if you'd rather weld).

Yes, I'm talking to Toyotafiberglass.com. Shipping from Canadia is the killer, though it may end up being worth it. Gotta talk to my body guy too.

The whole expense may make it prohibitive. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

You got a link for the Icelandic versions? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Is it really that bad to ship?
Can corey put it on a pallet to get it shipped to you? maybe find a truck?

bah i rolled my truck last week too, but it doesnt sound to be nearly as bad as yours (needs an a-pillar, windshield and front fender) but coreys stuff is nice, i say it's worht it.
if it makes u feel better, get a quote from corey and get him to add the shipping into teh price, so shipping is free <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Corey's fixin' me up a quote...

I will need to see if the bodyman has warm fuzzies about adding the flares. They would of course go VERY nicely with CJM's front fenders, and IIRC the shipping would not increase, but his fronts offer no additional clearance. Not sure if I need additional since my axle is ~3" forward, but... man, this long distance no-hands-on design stuff is tough on the mind.

Thanks, Corey- Even with shipping it is not out of the question.
