Hi All
I have an opportunity to buy 92' turbo-diesel Trooper (3.1L) imported from Japan with low mileage. I'd like to get some feed-back from few of the present owners, I'm especially interested in the engine performance, things like durability, mpg etc. I currently own 91' Trooper into which I've put a lot of work but the old girl is getting too rusty for her own good. Don't know much about these diesel Troopers so I'd like to get some more info before committing to one. All the input will be much appreciated.

Not yet, still trying to find out what the fuel economy is like on the 4JG2. At the moment it's a toss up between Pajero and a Trooper, though I think that Isuzu has a slightly better(stronger) engine.

Of course price matters as does fuel efficiency, either way down here in states that Trooper is to die for. 3.1 liter diesel in a Trooper??? I love it. I drive 2.2 TD and it gets bad fuel mileage because of the shape (reminds me of a sail), four wheel drive, height off the ground and the simple fact that I need to keep the pedal to the metal just to keep it up to the speed limit, unless of course heading down hill, then I fly! Jerry can no doubt give you the specs on the 3.1 liter. I wonder if that Trooper can be registered here. Brian Rodgers

I think there is import restriction in USA, all foreign vehicles have to be min. 25 years old in order to be brought in the country. Canada has a similar thing but the limit is 15 years, that's why we have more and more of these R/H drive vehicles showing up from Japan. Great thing about them is that most are in mint condition with very low mileages.

I think there is import restriction in USA, all foreign vehicles have to be min. 25 years old in order to be brought in the country. That is incorrect! New vehicles are imported all the time. However, be aware that you will pay a VERY heavy import tax. I hear it's 2.5% on cars and an astounding 25% on trucks! Make sure it meets U.S. emissions and also check with your local DMV for possible registration issues.

I've got a '91 import with the 2.8. I can't tell you much about the 3.1, but it's a very similar engine. A lot of people out there are fans of both. The 3.1's indirect injection and they added more electronic controls and emmissions stuff I think. If you haven't already checked it out this site's a good resources: http://www.itocuk.co.uk/forums/Parts seem to be easy to get from Australia or the UK and of course NA trooper parts swap over in some cases.

I'm getting a pretty consistent 28 mpg (imperial) both on the highway and city. I friend of mine has a short wheelbase version and he gets a little better. It's pretty good considering diesel is still $0.80/L here. People on itocuk seem to do a little better too - I'm gonna check my timing and see if that makes a difference.

We have a 3.1L in Australia but they are not that popular as the 3L-intercooled model, I heard this model is suffering from faulty injectors and has not been sought after. Pajero has 2.5 intercooled t/diesel until 1992 the after that is the 2.8L. This one has more grunt.
