Getting the Wheeling Fever
So itÆs that time again. I love California. Any way my 89 4runner 3vz V6.

The Motor has like 10000miles on it (rebuilt)It passed no problems two years ago.

The mods to the truck are Downy headers, electric fan, also had the injectors cleaned and rebuilt when I put the motor in.

Any way here is the results of the first test with a brand new Cat!

[Linked Image]

OK so I went home did a tune up changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, filter. And New O2 Also set the idle up a bit to.

So the next day I tried againà

What the hell? Got worse!!
So with tail between legs went home. Found the ASV diaphragm was gone! Had two exhaust leaks one the small 5/8ö pipe from the ASV to the Header, the other on the 5/8ö pipe from the EGR to the header. Replaced the ASV and tested it, now working. Fixed the exhaust leaks too. Turned the idle down a bit too. The timing is at 10 like the under hood sticker says to set it.

So letÆs try again

Dam Failed Worse then ever!! GROSS POLLUTER! NO!

OK now what? So I take the truck home really at a loss now? So I start checking things. The timing checks out, the TSP is working correctly; the ECU is not throwing any codes.
Oh all the tests were with regular gas. Any ideas I donÆt know what to do at this point.

From what I have read on this site, I will run a high octane fuel, and advance the timing a bit (maybe like 8or7), could my electric fan kicking on and off during the idle test cause some problem (the idle drops like 25-50rpm)?
could the fan be making the engine too cold and making it run different.

Body Damage is Cool
I hope you have NGK or ND spark plugs in it....and I think you physically need to remove all 6 and eyeball them. You may have a coked up plug.

i just failed mine too.

the HC was 130 while 15 mph.

this link

so the only thing that has changed since the last time i smogged the truck is the electric fan. could my fan be set too low of a Temp causing the coolant to be too cold and affecting the fuel mixture?

Looking at your results I'm kind of thinking your engine is running cool at idle causing a rich mixture as well. Take it out for a hard boot and see what temp gauge reads then see how much it cools down to at idle. But readings getting worse after a tune up etc doesn't make sense.

No clue how can i tell? besides taking it out and putting it on the stove in a pot of water with a thermometer in it? i am 99% sure it is a stock replacement what ever temp that is.

Hot water test works (and will tell you if the t-stat is really working - i.e. not stuck open for example) or pull it and look at the temperature stamp on it, or point an infrared thermometer at the top rad. hose and see what it reads.

btw, your ignition timing is diff for each test...

would that make that much diff?

at 7 BTDC, your numbers are very close to passing. at 12 and 11, they are worse...
