We were talking in the spare tire thread and discovered that the 91 4Runner's spare tires were lowered by chains, and the 95's were lowered by cable. Then somone said that their 93 had a cable, so now I am curious. Did Toyota switch to the cable in 92 when they did all the major changes, or was it in 93? When you look up inside your spare if you see a chain hanging down, then you have the chain system, if not, then you have the cable. If someone could look and tell me I would appreciate it.

One question I have is: For the 4runners that have the tire on the stock swing-out carrier, do they still have a chain/cable system under the vehcile too? There is a spot in the bumper to fit the unwinding tool-thingie. I never got to ask anyone with that setup...

It does, however look like it has a place to mount the assembly to if you had the desire to mount an extra tire underneath. I doubt if it would be too difficult to find an assembly at a wrecker.

My 92 has the chain also. However, I choose to mount the tire on the roof.

Ok, just for kicks.. my 92 does has a cable... Now for those of you that have a chain.. Do you have the "gearbox" that is mounted on the left frame rail or does your lowering rod go straight to the winch??? The 31" tire package has a gearbox to make the rods work at 45o angles on the drivers side frame rail where the non-31" package does not...

31" tires were stock on mine and you can see in the pic the winch system where the rod goes in diagonally.

If you have to ask about a SAS, you're not ready for it.
