Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I was out with the jeep today and when I got to where I was going I noticed a large amount of fuel comming from under the hood. Upon inspection it was leaking from the charcol canister. What could be causing this problem and what is the solution. Vehicle is an 85 cj7

Was it the cannister itelf that was leaking, or was it a connection to the cannister?
1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

That is what is odd. There was gas sprayed on the drivers side fender from somewhere. But, the majority of the gas was coming out of the bottom of the canister. Almost a gallons worth. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Also as a after thought. I went wheeling today and it didn't do a thing. Could this be caused by excessive heat and gas expansion.

I'd be looking closely at the fuel line to the carb.. I'm pretty sure that is the only pressurized fuel that could spray on that side of the engine. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

No more ideas here... That vapor canister is just that...a fume canister. I never saw one with any real gasoline in it. Maybe check it often to see what happens next... get good insurence. Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

jim is it possible for the vapor canister to have raw fuel in it. My thought being that there is a line running from the bowl of the carb to the canister then a line running from there to the tank. Could it be possible for fuel to over flow from the carb into the canister? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

jim is it possible to dissconnect the canister. I know it is there for emmisions but can I eliminate it.

Have you checked for a sticky needle valve in the float bowl? If the line goes from the float bowl to the cannister, and then from the cannister to the tank, it might be that a sticky needle valve is letting the float bowl fill up too much, and the excess is going into the cannister. It could also be a damaged or misadjusted float in the float bowl.
Even so, I'm not sure that would result in raw gasoline being sprayed into the engine compartment. I'd think it would just be ported back to the tank.
Then again, I'm not that familiar with yout model.
