To pull the steering wheel (assuming no steering wheel puller), I loosen the nut but leave it on the end of the shaft (a few turns at least). Then sit in the driver's seat and give the wheel a good tug. If it does pop loose, the nut on the end of the shaft will keep the wheel out of your face!
