Need a Spot
I just finished putting a head gasket in my daughters 91 2wd w/ 22re. I put it all back together and when we tried to start it up it kind of backfired through the intake manifold! Never did start.

Could this mean that it's not TDC? Could I be 360 degrees off? I'm not totally sure I had it at TDC, I had the timing mark on 0 and the number 1 piston was at the it's highest mark but I don't know if it was really at TDC. Did I screw anything up?

Dang! It's her first vehicle and I was so excited to get it running for her. I bought it last summer for $300 and have been working on it when I had time.

Any help or advice would be apprediated.

Thanks,
Gary

Yea, you probably are at 180 degrees out. You probably had the piston set at tdc but on the power stroke, not the compression stroke.

Only damage you could have done would be to the intake manifold. I've seen them crack due to the backfire, or blow the gasket out.

Easiest way to find TDC is to put your thumb over the number one spark plug hole, rotate the crank until you feel compression. Then CAREFULLY stick a screwdriver in the cylinder, and feel for the piston to come up as far as it will and then start to go back down, rotate it back so its all the way up, and then line up your 0 degree timing mark on your crank pulley.

Thanks for the replies! That was fast.

I'll try reinserting the distributor 180 opposite and see what that does. I'll let you know.

>>>*Hopefully it is just off time.

*But it is pretty easy to bolt the head down with the cam out of time to the short block, this can draw a valve open into a piston.

If the valve gets bent enough, the symptom is backfiring through the intake and...no start...*EB

Update: I changed the distributor 180 and it seems to want to start and it kind of does when I spray starting fluid into the intake but it backfired once again from the intake. The starting fluid makes it run a little bit and then dies.

Not sure what to try next. What's the best way to see if it's getting fuel? Should I try loosening the fuel line into the injector manifold?

I hope I don't have a bent valve!

You can also try the fuel pump test jumper and listed for the fuel pump:

Don't use starter fluid. You run the chance of blowing everything to pieces plus it dries the cyl wall of oil. Get a squeeze bottle filled with gas. Use this to prime the engine.
