I've used the starter method as described above 3 or 4 times now, but each time I have visions of the bolt shearing off. Beads of sweat start to form when I ask my helper to "bump the starter" while I'm bracing my breaker bar on that nut. Perhaps my fears are unfounded.

I've also removed the starter and used a jumbo-sized screwdriver or other large tool to brace against a tooth on the flywheel. It's worked, but I suppose there are risks involved here, too.
