Where are you looking, local paper, or somewhere online like Autotrader.com?

I personally have only seen MTs on 92s and 95-96. According to the things I have seen/read, 96 was the last year.

I got mine three or four years ago now. Two years before that I looked for a bit and ended up with a 92 AT. Then I got the bug again for the MT and started a new effort. I looked for over two months, during which time I only found a few through Autotrader, and none that I wanted to move on. Then the one I now have appeared and I bought it that day.

I have seen a few 95s in general, and only once a 96. My preference was for those years as I wanted the 24V SOHC motor.

And speaking of that, OldColt. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable, and well equipped. From my [very] amateur observations, the 24V 3.0 seems to be far more alike to the 3.5 than it is to the 12V 3.0.

I know the AT 24V uses the bigger t-case from the SR. (Ask one of the guys here who got 2.85s only to learn they didn't fit. It seems Oz never got the 24V, so no one knew.) I think the tranny might bolt to a 3.5. IIRC, I did a CAPS review and found the same bellhousings, but I don't think I found details on the shafts.

Something to think about...

the 24V 3.0 seems to be far more alike to the 3.5 than it is to the 12V 3.0.

There are three main engine families in the 6Gx series.
The 12V and the DOHC 3.0 are the early style engine.
The second gen is the 3.5 DOHC.
The third gen are all the 24V SOHC engines, these have the oil filter on the drivers side of the engine.
All of the engines have the same bellhousing and flywheel bolt pattern.
There are many detail changes as to the bosses on the side of the blocks but they all can be interchanged with a mix and match of brackets.
As long as a transmission came off a V6 it will go on another. In the 2nd gen Montero the trans crossmember is reversible for the different length transmissions. The driveshafts are different length for each trans/ transfer combination.

I do want to keep the transfer or at least the full time ability when I swap, I do not know if all the parts are in country for this.

Ha, that is why the x-case skid plate did not fit on my 93SR. I got one from a later model gen2.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

One answer I have not come up with is when Mitsu changed to the alloy case standard trans? These were in the Sport but did they show up before 1996?

Hmm, can't really say myself. I am away from the house for a bit and driving the 87. I try to remember to crawl underneath the 95 when I get back.

Well, started out on C-list, 'cause it's cheap junk.
After a while I got curious, and went national
(traderonline.com) and found zip.

But if it all swaps around, then I'm on the crawl
for a g2 with a munched autobox... heh heh...

Gen 1 parts are still easy to find in yards around here.

Wow, I came up with zip too on Autotrader.

Don't forget that the Gen II has ActiveTrac, if that makes a difference to you needs. I like it for where I live, where we have winter, and occasional bad rains.
