Getting the Wheeling Fever

[quote]"Just in changing the way I drive my 99XJ 4.0L 5 speed all stock I can make more significant changes to my fuel mileage. If I drive around aggressively and really rip through the gears I get about 19mpg, if I keep my foot out of it and drive around more normal, I average about 21 mpg,

I would kill for numbers like that. LetÆs face it - the wranglers have the aerodynamics of a billboard and that translates into low mileage. We didn't by these for the mileage. The low gearing and strong engine is what gets it through the mud and rock we want to traverse.
Some time ago I tried to change gears whenever that stupid idiot light told me too and still averaged just over 15mpg around town. With lots of highway driving, I can get close to 18mpg, but thatÆs about the best I can hope for.
Anybody know how that idiot light works? It once told me to up-shift as I was slowing for a light, at 15mph in second gear. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

Brad all of them I have looked at worked right off of the vacuume.. High vac turned on the light if it was in gear.
And low vac, such as one might have if accelerating, kept it off.

That stupid shift light is for people who dont know how to drive a manual transmission. If I ever have my dash apart, that will be the first thing I remove. Just listen to your engine and watch your tach, they will tell you when to shift.

The XJ's are a little more areodynamic than the wranglers too, and mine all stock with a 4.0L 5 speed, and 3.07 gears has to be just about as ideal as a XJ can get for driving around town as my DD. If I ever decide to turn it to a play toy and modify it, my mileage will surely drop.

Hows your hp feel. I had the same issue with my 04 rubi, bad mpg and low hp. Took it to the dealer and they found that the fuel pump wasn't providing the proper fuel pressure. It was only getting like 30 psi and needed around 50. They replaced the pump under warranty and man what a difference. I am now getting around 15 on the freeway and 13 in the city with 32" tires an automatic with 40,000 miles and a roof rack. The Roof rack really killed the gas mileage. I used to get around 18 on the highway.

This doesnt make sense to me, maybe its because its 1 AM and I have been up since 6 AM and I should be in bed, but if a vehicle was making less power it should be using less fuel, and then getting better mileage. I could see how a lower pressure pump could adversely affect power, but its just not making sense how that would also adversely affect fuel mileage. I'll have to think about this for a bit.

I don't really get it either.. But the computer in these things takes a LOT into consideration. MAybe the computer will cover for the pressure...... But at top end it should still run dry anyway. Seems the thing eould go to hell at hiway speeds if there wasn't enough pressure.
Of course the dealers are in it for the money, so what they actually put in there does not make sense half of the time anyway. If a guy comes in and they let him get away they make no money at all.

Body Damage is Cool
Seems plausible.

I get 10-12 MPG if I'm lucky in the city. Only use low octane around town.
Freeway is fine,I fill up with 92 octane for road trips and get 350 miles before filling up again.
220 miles on a tank is good for my truck in town.

Been riding the motorcyle to work M-F and saved a couple hundred in gas last month.

Lots of steep hills, drawbridges, stopped trains and stoplights every freakin block to kill my city milage.

This is no Bull...
I was having a tuff time keeping the jeep at highway speeds so with the automatic(Ill never get a jeep with an auto again) it was constantly shifting in and out of overdrive. I would have to put my foot into it whole lot more to get it to go anywhere. Took it to the dealer and they told me that the pump wasnt providing the proper pressure and it had to be replaced. Their explanation for the bad fuel mileage was because the computer saw the lean fuel mixture caused by the low fuel pressure it would dump more fuel into the mix. hence the bad fuel mileage. Wierd part was that I never got a check engine light. After they replaced the pump, my jeep has no trouble holding freeway speeds. I just recently put the banks exhaust kit and a intake on it and it sounds a lot beter and I did notice a little more hp on the freeway I can now pass other cars. Fuel mileage didnt change too much after the mods.
