Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi, which is the best engine for SWB Pajero, 4d56 or 4m40? I always wanted to have Pajero with 4d56 and not with 4m40, but now I have Pajero with 4m40.

I have a 4d56 which I like. For what it's worth, the local MMC parts guy says the 4m40 is more powerful and reliable. He says they don't come back for repair. Having a timing chain instead of a belt is a plus in my opinion. I hope to have a 4m40 ITD in my future.

I'm taking this offtopic for a second, for your future benefit/enjoyment of this forum...

You have been asked nicely to keep your threads on one subject together. Spamming the forum with multiple posts on one subject is not only rude, it is against posting guidelines...

You have also been asked by helpful members to state your location, and to put your vehicle's details in your signature so they don't need to keep asking...

You were asked by another helpful poster to make the subject reflect the content of the thread...

You haven't done any of these things to this point. I have just had to remove FOUR of your posts (since last night) that didn't follow these guidelines, and don't appreciate the waste of time.

Before you make ANY more posts, read these guidelines:

If you want to get use and enjoyment out of this community, you have to follow our guidelines, otherwise you will find you no longer have use of it.

Now, back ontopic:

4M40, as previously stated, has a timing chain, which in and of itself is a big reason to have it. Also has more HP, which the 4D56 certainly doesn't have an abundance of. But another reason many like the 4m40 is because it also came in a vehicle with stronger components overall, ie bigger diffs, etc.

Sell your 4m40, buy 4d56 and be happy!

Seriously, I heard that 4d56 much more reliable than yours.

Ei, Mr. Pajerist you said that, becouse you have 4d56

{2.5td LWB}. I know that 2.5td which has 99hp is not enough for LWB Pajero, even for offroads. and as I said that I'd like 4d56 than 4m40, I ment it for SWB Pajero. Do you understand?

More power would be nice but the 4d56 does have enough power to move the vehicle around with ease. I even pull my tent trailer with mine and find it not too bad. Before my Pajero I was driving an 84 Toyota Diesel truck with the 2L engine. It had around 70-75 HP. If I had the option for the 4m40 I would take it but I am happy with the 4d56 as well.

and the 4D56 is easy to get parts for...most parts interchange with the 4D55 2.3 litre Diesel. the 4D56 has 105HP and 180lbs. of torque if I remember correctly. the pajero is quite a heavy truck but it moves it around quite nicely.

I forgot. The other thing I learned about the differences was that the 4m40 trans is stronger than the 4d56 - manual that is (who would have an auto?). The older trans has a weak #2 synchro. Three of the six older MMCs I've had had synchro problems. I have to double clutch the Pajero I have now - easier than writing a $1200 check.

one thing to remember though...if your nice to your tranny it will be nice to you...my old 88 Ram 50 had 318,000km on it and it still shifted like it did when I bought it with 186,000km on it.

Thank you for this replies. Are the 4d56's and 4m40's turbochargers same?
