The snorkle seems like it would cause more drag(wind resistance) than anything.

When I am going 70mph and stick my hand out the window, it gets pushed back hard. Now if I had a small box to catch the wind, it would push it harder. I am not saying you get a 1lb boost, but it has to flow better with air getting pushed in rather than getting sucked in. True, but not enough to make any kind of real difference. Also, as I think has already been mentioned, the longer intake path ads a lot of resistance-restriction to the flow.

true, it may be longer, but I think, in my opinion, the snorkel will give a far better intake consumption than stock. Why I say that... well, when I took the inner fender plastic off, the air was being brought in from a small oval shaped opening 1/4 the size of the snorkel opening and it would go right behind the right side (US passenager side) light then into the whole wheel well (i'm sure air was escaping from the cracks of the plastic inner fender too) then from there it would go in through an adapter going to the air box.
What I'm saying is... the air before (stock) was being forced directly to the inner fender, then kinda INdirectly pushed into the air box unlike the snorkel. The snorkel may be longer, but it has a much smoother, very direct air motion going to the air box, and with all that high wind being forced in there, i'm sure it doesnt really matter how long the tube is. Some have said they havent seen any improvments, but then again, what kind of improvments are we looking for.... ? Better gas milage, more power? I could say, better gas milage, no, more power with the same gas milage, maybe so? So does it really help in that case if I get more power with the same gas milage? I would say yes, but I havent really tested it out, anyone else care to enlight on this subject?
We talk about wind resistance, but how wind resistant is our Monteros and Pajeros anyways?? We add racks, bigger tires, bull bars and other things. When talking about wind resistance, we dont even gotta worry about the snorkel being the culprit of all the wind resistance. The snorkel may be considers a "wind resistant" object to our vehicle, but thats not going to make us slow when driving, if anything, i would think it would help, In my opinion
The great snorkel debate continues....

I made a tube go directly from the snorkel to the air box. The stock plastic piece had a smaller opening and curved a lot more (sorta like a Z shape) than what I have now. My vote is it helps.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

The only thing intake boost in pressure provides is ability to burn more gas (at same RPM) thus more power. Power comes from fuel burnt not air injested. Fuel injection system maintains constant ratio of fuel to air (well ideally). So providing infinitesimally more (maybe) air to engine will be offset by small increase in power required to move vehicle forward from additional drag. More power needed = more fuel burnt = worse mpg (you can't fool physics).
Ingenuity of stock system is in fact that it uses that same/similar ram (which is composed of entire front clip of car) effect to pressurize area inside fender. Air/gas flows from area with high pressure to area with low pressure there is no such thing as direct or indirect flow That why even if you turn you heater fan off air still flows into cab despite the fact the intake grill vents are almost horizontal etc.
I've studied gas/fluid dynamics for my mechanical engineer degree for two years. I can tell you aerodynamics and fluid flow is one of the most complicated subjects out there this side of quantum mechanics. I've not even began to understand acute details of it. So to definitely say this scoop at the roof provides more air to engine would be a far stretch of imagination.
I was planning to do simple test before I installed snork. Get sensitive vacuum gage and measure intake pressure before and after installation under similar load conditions. Of course time constrains didn't play in favor of this experiment. But for those with Safary you can do simple experiment never the less. Turn snork head facing backwards and see if you loose any power. (or better ask somebody to turn it for you and drive it without looking at it few times) I did just the same due to the rain and no I didn't feel any noticeable decrease in power. And whatever gain is facing forward it will be offset by same loss facing backwards. Someday I'll try a more scientific approach and use a gauge but it better be very sensitive one.

didn't you guys know that snorkles add at least 50 horsepower, and sometimes more if you colormatch it
