I have a 1993 4wd 22re, runs good and solid. It started making a high pitch squeal at high RPMs. I have new belts, and I recently sprayed belt dressing on them to try to alleviate the problem, no luck though. I have not steam cleaned the engine, due to its age and the fear of doing some type of damage, (thinking dust may be the culprit). Is this a "warning" that something may be about to go out, bearing?, pulley? timing chain? I dont have a tach, so by high RPMs I mean 30-35 mph in 2nd gear, it squeals just before the shift into 3rd. This morning it squealed at 42 just before the shift into 4th..Thanks for any info.

Steam clean it anyway...
Check the water pump weep hole for leakage.

Yes I have power steering. If I do have an idler pully bearing go out, what should I replace during the breakdown?? I would be having it done, as I do not have the knowledge to do it myself. My truck has 196k on it. Timing chain?

Chances are that your belts still slipping. I've been down the same road and belt dressing didnt work. Retighten the belts. If that doesnt work then chances its a bad idler pulley bearing. Heres a link to an old thread about the pulley. link

A little more info on this. It starts at startup when it is really hot outside, when I leave work in the afternoon. It lasts until I put it in first gear and stsrt to drive. The Clutch depressed or not does nothing. Revving it up a tad does nothing. It will not squeal when I crank it in the morning to go to work. The AC on or off has nothing to do with it. Any Ideas, advice??.......Thanks

Is your engine oil toped off? May sound Stupid but it's well worth it to check. While your at it, you might check all of the fluids.
Maybe spray some WD-40 on the pullies to see if it goes away. The WD-40 will only make it go away for a short time, but if it does go away at all, then you'll have a clue where your problem is.
Does it matter if the truck is cold, warm, warmer, or hot?
Good luck, GOI

Unhook your belts one at a time and run the engine. When the squeal stops you found the bad belt or idler pulley. Check the pulley and either repack the bearing or replace it and TIGHTEN the belt tightly. I had the exact problem and turned out I wasnt getting the belt tight enough.

Belt spray might help....tightening it may or may not help. Some belt brands just do not "fit" well on the pulley and will loose grip.
