Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi folks, it finally dawned on me that I needed to replace my rear u-joints. So I've limped my rig around using front drive only this week while the rear driveline is getting refurbished. I noticed gear oil coming from the front differential vent. My first suspicion is an overfilled diff. But then I say to myself, that's impossible, because you can't really get much more in there than the proper amount without it spilling back out of the filler hole. At least not so much that it comes out of the vent! What gives?

Thanks,
Doug

Do you have your diff breathers extended? If not have you ran through any water lately? They can get over-filled with water if the breathers are not extended. The caps that are supposed to stop that sort of work.

Could be the vent was plugged and the pressure of the hot oil pushed it open and oil came out. Or there may have been moisture in there and as it boiled out, it took some oil with it.
