If you EVER drive it on the street you will REGRET either one up there.
If you just must have a front locker you need one of the POSI ones with clutches in it so the thing will turn curves and corners on the street.

You can install a Lock Right locker in the front (I have one in my CJ-7), but you will have to be in 2WD and have front hubs that are unlocked in order to drive it on the street.

Offroad, when you're on very hard dry dirt, you may have to shift from 4WD to 2WD (don't have to unlock the front hubs)when making a very sharp turn. I've only had that happen a couple of times. It's no problem for me, because I have twin-stick shifters on my Dana 300, so I can disengage the front axle easily and quickly, while leaving the rear axle in Low Range.

So, if you're into hard core wheeling, with little street use, a front auto locker isn't bad. If you use it primarily on the street, don't get one.

And I'd NEVER weld a front differential. They suck big time, even off road. Any traction at all, and you won't be able to turn it.

The only thing I would ever put in a front is something like an ARB, so you can have it drive normal most of the time, and then when you need it on that rare ocassion, you can lock it in.

I've got a customer who is having me order up his third set of D44 chromo shafts and each time I tell him get rid of that stupid front spool and even stock shafts will last.

Sorry this guy is a complete rockhead who knows best.?

SD

PS at least he does not ask for the shafts to be warrantied.

I would have to agree with this, having owned both a Lockright and an ARB upfront I would say HANDS DOWN the ARB is the way to go. It is pretty hard to make turns in 4WD with the lockright let alone tight turns offroad while in 4WD. I was always having to shift into 2WD to make a tight turn and sometimes that might not be an option offroad (I got body damage on 3 occasions from just quite not making a TIGHT ENOUGH turn when I had the front lockright ). On the street they are pretty much the same in 2WD, but off road I like being able to easily maneuver at a flick of a switch

Well that'll work...sort of anyway. By using that device with a lockright up front, the result will be that when in a righthand turn your left front will be spinning forward faster than the rear wheels...and in a lefthand turn the left front will be dragging and slipping slower than the rear wheels.. Lockers up front are a hazard on the street unless you can lockout BOTH front wheels.

Best of luck with your plans; but, I can't help but wonder why your going to so so much trouble to simply avoid dropping in an ARB locker? ARB's are not that expensive, and are the best solution to your four-wheeling needs, it seems. Their are other mechanical and electric lockers, but presently they are problematic on the trail.
