Getting the Wheeling Fever
Greetings,

The 6G72 block has been used for everything from our
tough Montero's to the ubiquitous Dodge Caravan's.
It's in 3000GT's and Hundai's. My question to this
learned and experienced group is what blocks are the same
or can be readily modified to be switched.

My current problem is that my 1995 Montero SR 24V SOHC
3.0 has a cracked block (Wife ran it without coolent)<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />,
while I was at sea. I had the heads rebuilt only to find
block crack afterward. So, I'm looking for a 6G72 Montero
core to rebuild and they are scarce as hen's teeth here in
Oregon. Anybody have some hands on knowledge to share. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />???

Sorry about your engine, I Know all 6g72 12valve Blocks are the same, you can interchanged it with the other cars and truck. I'm not sure about the 24 Valve engines. I Think it will bolt on without to much troubles

Montero 98, 5sp manual, Leaf Sprung, SWB, 3.0 V6 engine 12valve, 32" Kumho MT, custom bull bar, custom snorkel, 3 inch lift, KC highlight, 4.625 gears, 1.925 Low, part time 4WD non super select or active trac.

I thought the 95SRs had the double overhead cams.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Mine is a 5 speed manual SOHC 3.0 and I could be wrong
and that it is a LS. I've owned it since 97' and it
is the only manual I've seen in the US from late 95'. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />

I think the fwd 3.0's have a dside (when you turn it 90* for rwd) oil filter adapter boss. I think you have to plug that one and drill the boss on the pside. Otherwise, good to go. 24v and 12v blocks are the same, too, I think.

I haven't really looked at mine, but I thought that came right off the oil pump. I don't have the van anymore to compare. I should have taken some pics when I had the old van and the old job (I could have had both in the air for taking pictures).

I think what has to be drilled on the passenger side is the hole for the dipstick.

Easy fix...
89> Sigma
90> Stealth
90> Galant
90> 3000 GT

Basically, ANY Mitsu from 89 up will plug right in there with oil pan, oil pump setup (with filter boss), harmonic balancer, timing covers, intake, exhaust & all front accessories.

I have a Stealth engine in my 89 Raider. I would suggest while that deep into stripping the engine, FULL gasket set, WATER PUMP, check water pump pipe, CHECK ALL LIFTERS (temporarily unseized 5 lifters in my engine this weekend) & for a tad of insurance, throw some crank & rod bearings in the block.

Further, rework the heads & maybe use the cams from monty.

Are the caravans different? Took my cue from an 89 G-caravan.

I have a rebuilt 6g72 out of a 87' Caravan out in my barn. The 24V heads almost fit but not quite. Also, the water
inlet and outlet are 2 inchs closer together than on the
Montero and of course the tranverse engine mounts are
different.
