Rodeoguy(mike) broke his front 5.38 in Uwharrie with just a little bump of throttle..........he had 35's with a LSD. Mike's gear was inspected here and we determined it was bad set up. (his budy set them up, and even conceeded that he was a little bit of a novice at it) we ran a pattern on it........and deternined that there was not enough depth on the pattern. ie: pinion gear was riding too far out on the ring gear.....leading to the falure on the ring gear teeth. so i wouldn't count his as a testimonial to thier strength. (not like it really matters i don't have any to sell anyway....just adding to the "whole" story)

Yep, I figured it was a little bit of a risk having him set up the gears. But since the shops here in Nova all wanted 500+ for one gear set up, I could afford to ruin 2 sets of gears before we got it right. I just ran out of gears to buy.

Hmmm! Glad I bought a set of spares. Sorry to hear you guys are breaking them. Now I wonder if I should even use mine. Jerry and I set up my pumpkins with them and ARB's Dang, what a lot of money invested in something that may need to cryo'ed first.

CO Zu crunch time
Somehow I lost 3 of my original ring gear bolts for the 4.55 front. I am gonna try my local Isuzu dealer in the morning, because of my time problem. But if that fails what is the proper grade, thread size and length?

I had a tough time sourcing the ring gear bolts for the 12 bolt. St Charles Isuzu did a nationwide search for them and came up with only 4.
Jerry Lemond sent me all of them, the next day. He had them on the shelf.

One of these days I'm going to make Crawloween. But, not this year. I've accepeted an invitation to do the "Fall Colors Tour" in Arkansas by dirt bike Holloween Weekend. (Adventure Motorcycles, My other passion.) Have you guys tried listing a parts wanted? With all the SAS's that have gone on I'm sure there are more than a few old 10 bolt front pumpkins laying around somebody would love to have hauled away.
I have been holding on to mine because Jerry and I have been kicking around the idea of making a straight axle out of one of my 10 bolt pumpkins. This way I could have my 5:38's and straight axle too! I can't make up my mind if I want Toyota or Dana 44's outers. I know the Dana would be stronger, but now I worry that that would make the R&P the weak link.
Just thought I'd throw this out for the "out of the box" thinkers. Curtis

That is a cool idea, but I think it would be alot stronger if you used a 12 bolt to make the front axle. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

And flipping them to use the coast side would be a waste of expensive gears. Wouldn't last one trip. Beside if you want to build a Rock Crawler why not use a Dana 60? Parts are a whole bunch cheaper. Nope, for some moderate to light off roading a 10 bolt would be plenty. Curtis

I have my 4.55s back installed, LSD front open rear. My other mechanic said the reason the 5.38s fragged is poor setup. Driveway tire sex ....
