So my bro and I finally had a chance to pull his 93Trooper RS apart, and sure enough the motor is filled with a lovely green and milky substance. Instead of rebuilding the motor he is looking to get another motor to replace it with, and we are going to rebuild the old one just for fun.

My question is, can a 3.2SOHC from a 1994 Rodeo be swapped in place of his DOHC?? Im sure its been dicussed before, but im stupid and dont know how to search.

Thanks for the help!!!!!!

Joel

The short answer is yes...that vintage of 3.2 SOHC/DOHC are very nearly the same motor. They have different heads, intake manifold...that's about all I can think of that is different offhand. Many interchangable parts.

But it should bolt right in, and AFAIK you can use the existing mounts and exhaust.

Jerry Lemond is a great resource for this kind of swap jlemond@bellsouth.net

Joel-

Search. I know that Jerry has answered this one before. Something about keeping the intake and exhaust manifolds or something of the sort.

Good Luck,
Michael

The biggest thing is that they use a different programmed ecu. I was looking into going the opposite way with mine to get the hp and possibley a super charger.

YEP THEY WILL BOLT RIGHT IN, JUST START AT WHERE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD BOLTS TO THE CYL HEADS AND FROM THERE UP USE EVERYTHING FROM THE DOHC ON THE SOHC ENG AND USE THE DRIVERS SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WHERE THE EGR PIPE BOLTS ON AND THE DOHC EGR PIPE , OTHER THAN THIS IT IS PRETTY MUCH A BOLT FOR BOLT SWAP, THE LOWER END SHORT BLOCK ARE IDENTICAL TO EACH OTHER . , THE ECM IS PROGRAMMED SLIGHTELY DIFF BECAUSE OF THE SECONDARY THROTTLE BLADE THAT THE SOHC DOES NOT USE . OTHERWISE IT WILL RUN FINE BUT YOU MUST USE THE ELECTRONICS FROM THE DOHC TOP JERRY

I suspect Jerry was thinking in the other direction (swapping a DOHC in for a SOHC). He should confirm this, but I think he meant you need to bring the ECM with the donor engine.

HEY STEVE LETS WORD IT THIS WAY, IF THE TRUCK HAS A DOHC IN IT FROM THE FACTOTY, THAT IS THE ECM TO USE,

IF IT HAS AN SOHC THAT IS THE ONE TO USE ,

BASICALLY YOU WANT TO USE THE ECM THAT GOES WITH THE VEH AND THE TOP MANIFOLDING THAT CAME ON THE VEH.

FROM THE MANIFOLD DOWN IT DOESNT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Thanks for the replies, Jerry you are a genius! haha.

Yesterday my bro and I made a trip up to Jersey to pick up his "new" 3.2 SOHC to drop in where the DOHC was. We pulled his old motor last night, and noticed that the Power steering pumps are on opposite sides of the motor, other than that it looks pretty easy, thanks to you all. I think the brackets for the power steering will swap over to the other side and be fine.

It just so happened this guy (Ron) had an extra 2.6L which supposedly only has 60K on it laying around. So i promptly snatched that up from him as well. Went to get one engine, and came back with two engines, a transimission/transfercase, and a new driver side door handle!! WOOHOO good times. We are taking a lot of pictures, and wil be sure to do a write up when its all done.

OK YOU HAVE AN ENGINE FROM A RODEO , THERE IS NO DIFF IN THE ENG ITSELF ,JUST THE ACCESSORIES THE SPOT THEY MOUNT IN, JUST SWAP THE PWR STR PUMP FORM THE DOHC TO THE NEWR SOHC ALL THE ACC WILL BOLT RIGHT ON, THE RODEO HAS THE PWR STR PMP ON THE DRV SIDE AND THE TROOPER IS ON THE PASS SIDE , DONT LOOSE ANY BRACKETS FROM EITHER ENG , AS YOU WILL HAVE TO MIX AND MATCH A COUPLE OF THEM AND THE EGR PIPE IS ROUTED A LITTLE DIF, OTHER THAN THAT IT IS PRETTY STRIGHTFORWARD , JERRY
