mechanic says it's the head - a change in coolant colour, his quote to replace with a toyota head is 4000. Does that sound about right?

do some research and see if you can find an upgraded head or something simular. There are some fixes for the 2lt head but I'm not familiar with all that. I would expect to spend about that much depending one the rep of the mechanic.

Definitely post on Ih8mud.com or www.toyotadiesel.com, you'll find plenty of help. Any new head will be the updated design, but there are different manufacturers, so make sure whoever does the replacement uses a head from a reputable mfr, as recommended by the online forums. Also try www.hiluxsurf.co.uk for info.

Edit: for what it's worth, the head prolly didn't crack from her overheating it... it was probably cracked long before it ever made the boat trip over. Not that it matters at this point anyway, but she shouldn't let herself think that she let the engine overheat, thus cracking the head.
