Getting the Wheeling Fever
I am going to be doing my bed soon with Herculiner and I am looking for someone that has done this after spraying the bed with primer paint. I have a lot of rust and want to sand it out and primer it to keep it from coming back. I know the paint needs to be roughed up and cleaned but I am looking for someone who has experience using it primer paint.

I did some searching before posting and from what I read the Herculiner is not a rust inhibitor nor does it stick to bare metal that well.

When I did the Duplicolor liner in my VW pickup, I primed the bare metal areas then sanded and applied the liner. It's held up fine for about 7-8 years now.

now that you mention it the only place mine has come loose is where I had bare metal showing and put herculiner over it.I used the cheaper "dupli-color" brand and I was well pleased.Ive thought of doing the fender wells too.

Best to sand blast it out if you can . At the very least , wire wheel as much of it out as you can and treat it with a mild phoshoric acid solution. If your not comfortable mixing up your own go to a auto body supply and buy premade metal prep. Let it soak good , wash it off, then prime.

I was planning on using a wire wheel, did not know about the solution. I have never used that solution, how harsh is it? I only ask since you stated I might be uncomftorable.
I did go to Herculiners website and it does say that it can be used on primer. I forgot the rule; if all else fails, read the instructions. Thanks for the advice.

You can use something like CLR or LimeAway bathroom cleaner, both are phosphoric acid based. The acid will dissolve the rust a also roughen up the steel a bit. Just brush it on and keep it wet (brush on more acid) for about 30 minutes then rinse off and let dry. It'll leave a light surface "rust" coating of iron phosphate. You can get the real metal etching compound and it'll also have a zinc component to it in addition to the acid.

go to your local paint supply place and ask for a reust adhibitor excuse my speelling, then just spray the rusted areas and prime then use your bed liner spray.
