Lol! Wow, when the juices start to flow...

I had just got this from the guy who stumbled onto the Volvo/Zook possibility.

Zooky,

What's the input spline count into the t-case on the Vulva? Kia is 25 spline, or so I'm told.

volvos dont have T-cases ;P
the output shaft for the one I have is 23 spline, like the toyota T-case, but is thicker then the Kia one. I think the one Glenn picked up had a different diameter
[/quote]

See how he busts my balls? of course the Volvo doesn't have a t-case and he knew what I meant.

You know pirate, so I expect that from Zooky, the fawker.

Volvo straight into Toy. Kewl.

Doubler eats up driveshaft length. A gear set would prolly keep in near stock length.

But the two sticks looks bling.

Yeah, PA prices are way low,and the yards are way big, litterally 1000's of cars in dozens of acres with bus service around the yard. They sometimes do $50 all-you-can-carry in your wheelborrow or wagon weekends.

PA has inpection laws that require cars to be junked due to rust. Makes for lots of junkers that would be on the road in most states.

Want me to look out for a top-shift gear-driven Toy case for you?

no, i can find one, just gotta get there early.

i guess the volvo and toy stuff just mates right up with the OTT adapter.

i think i'm gonna just run a single toy 4.7 case for a while and maybe get a stock low range box later.

so, then, i need just the OTT adapter, volvo tranny and toy t-case, and d-shaft parts for now.

one question: what about the torque converter? somewhere i saw a list, maybe here, maybe pirate, where someone laid it out that certain applications of this tranny have lock-up converters and that sort. now, here's where things get a little fuzzy for me- i KNOW what a "stall" converter does, but what does a "lock-up" converter do and would it be preferable to what i have?

oh, and just to be sure- i would JUST keep the bell housing and use whatever converter fits the volvo tranny, correct? in case there is a spline difference or something of that nature?

Got this today from Randy.

the trackick is 23 spline but smaller diameter then then the Kia and volvo. Easiest thing for a Kia owner to do would be to swap in a trackick 4-speed (using their bellhousing and torque converter), and use one of the Kicker doublers or the trackick T-case with some reduction gears.

If a trackick owner wants T-case flanges they could use sami flanges on their T-case.

I made an adapter to mount a toyota case to the volvo transmission and I have the 4.7 gears for it. I have a 22R laying around and was thinking of putting that combo in my sami, dont think it has been done before. That would be a sweet combo off road and plenty of power for the street.

This should be exactly what you are looking for, and for the average Kia owner, the option of using the Zook stuff to get them there.

Notice the 22R motor option? Lotsa Hi-Po motor stuff for that.

HTH,

I missed some of this. Hopefully Randy's response above answers which converter to use.

The electric lock up can be installed on a switch, wich makes it more selectable. I know my buddy Bob was looking into if it would lock it up to the point that you could key start, but I told him I think fluid pressure would need to be present to do that.

Here's what wikipedia says about lock ups...

Quote
pumping losses within the torque converter reduce efficiency and generate waste heat. In modern automotive applications, this problem is commonly avoided by use of a lock-up clutch that physically links the pump and turbine, effectively changing the converter into a purely mechanical coupling. The result is no slippage, and therefore virtually no power loss.

well, apparently, our tc is a lock up kind, hence, the "L" in the designation, although, it DOES slip, a lot, when on a 45* angle 2-foot tall set of stair step ledges........

nothing further to add just yet, still looking.....

Body Damage is Cool
I took the gurly comment lightly, I know what your saying. I see about 5 women driving Sportage's to one guy. They even say mine with the lift is cute, I think it looks somewhat respectable, like a 4WD should look.

one more BIG thing:

the Sorento is consistently listed as also running the AW 03-72LE tranny, it is heavier and has more HP and torque. maybe the auto tranny from it is the same as the Volvo 23-spline unit. still have to run a different t-case, though, as the Sorento's front output is on the driver's side. that would be fine and dandy had i not already searched so long and hard for a passenger side d44..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

this is the Sorento auto tranny, ***edited- it looks like the bolt pattern from bellhousing to tranny might be the same, but not sure about anything else....
