Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 1990 V6 Montero will not start unless I play with the shifter. When in park I must move the shifter back until I hear a click and then she will start. Also the other night I had a load of tile in the back and parked on a bit of an incline and it would not start at all. I finally wiggled the shifter real hard while turning the key and got her to start. Any thoughts on this problem ?? Thanks

Sounds like your nuetral safety switch is bad(only alows truck to be started in park or nuetral). I've never replaced one so I'll let some one more knowlegable chime in. should not be to difficult a repair.

While I don't have an auto tranny, if I recall correctly there is an interlock switch that is supposed to prevent starting the engine if the vehicle isn't in park or neutral. Can you start it in neutral? I suspect the switch is either mis-adjusted or has gone bad. Use the search function, put in "neutral safety switch" (include the double quotes), select newer than 5 years and choose the Mitsubishi 4X4 & SUV tech and Mitsubishi Archive forums, and read through the posts that the search engine returns to you.

Good luck!

remove the center plastic covering shifter. unscrew the switch and slide it back just a hair, if its dirty clean it. just over the 20 years of it being on the planet the shifting into park moves the switch ever so slightly.

EDIT: Also, if you clean the switch up, reapply dielectric grease to the leads. prevents the copper from going green.

Try starting with the A/T in N as well.
But it definately sounds like the safety switch.
As the truck ages, the shifter notch track also wears, and elongates the slot it rides in. This will let the shifter move out of the range of the safety switch, and make the switch look bad. The switch's position is adjustable, so first check if it's simply moved out of alignment...
