My '93 Runner started doing the same kinda thing after having the tranny rebuilt. I got under there and adjusted the linkage...and kept adjusting (probably 6-7 tries) until the shifter felt like it was going in and staying in 4WD low and high. Road tested, and it works great now. REAL simple to do. 12mm socket on a long extension. Just loosen the nut, try making the linkage as long as possible (since you did say it's not staying in 4WD) and work from there. Hope this helps.
