Hello all --

I've been running my diesel Trooper around a bit (not too much as it has no hood yet) and have noticed a noise coming from what I think is the bellhousing area when idling in neutral, only present with the clutch engaged (goes away when the pedal is pressed down).

It is a rattling, scratching noise. The transmission had some water in it when it arrived and much rust powder in the bellhousing, so I imagine it had not been treated with kid gloves during shipping/storage, but it has fresh oil in it now.

What I am wondering is, is this in any way normal noise? Bear in mind that I currently have no carpet, shift boots or sound deadening material installed in this area.

Also bear in mind that this can be heard over a running diesel engine with absolutely no exhaust installed. The turbo does take a lot of noise out, though... it's not that loud (and I've heard gassers run straight off the headers before - this is nowhere near the same sort of exhaust noise).

Its one of the bearings on the input shaft then, based on when it makes the noise. I had an MUA 5 make a noise like that when the oil level got too low. Drove it another 10K miles, sounded like an electric drill, dull whirring. I would just run it.

HEY ADRIAN , CHRIS IS RIGHT THAT IS NOT A NORMAL NOISE , THE REASON IT GOES AWAY WHEN YOU PUSH THE CLUTCH IN IS THE INPUT SHAFT STOPS TURNING, IT IS MOST LIKELY THE MAIN SHAFT INPUT BEARING ESP IF IT HAD RUST OR WATER IN THE FRONT OF THE TRANS , IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE AND AT THE WORST THE BEARIGN CAN ACTUALLY LET THE INPUT SHAFT OR THE COUNTER SHAFT DROP AN D FORCE THE FRONT GEARS TO EAT EACH OTHER UP, NOT GOOD , IF IT IS REAL LOUD YOU MIGHT THINK ABOUT PULLING IT APART AND CHECKING IT OUT, OH BY THE WAY I GOT THE BOX OF PARTS YOU SENT .JERRY

yeah, you guys are confirming what I thought, too... sounded like a bearing going out.

not sure whether i will run it a while or try and repair it - i need to finish this thing soon, as i've got classes starting in a month and then no more free time.

by the way, everyone i know in the minneapolis area seems to be accounted for after tonight's disaster. i drive right by that bridge every day during my commute and have traversed it probably a thousand times. thoughts go out to everyone who may live in the twin cities or know someone in the area. hope all is well, wherever you are.
