1.5 Years ago I had a terrible engine rebuild, just no power. And that lack of power kept getting worse until the truck would hardly run. What my mechanic discovered was the thin wire in the MAF(Mass air flow sensor) was caked in gunk. Simply cleaning that wire(not buying a new sensor) breathed new life into the rig. Will be interesting to see what happens to fuel economy. Also got rid of an early morning extremely high idle. So if your 3.0 is 15-20 years old, you might want to inspect that sensor the next time you are out cleaning your IAC motor.

I thought our MAF was located on the airfilter housing where the wire hooks up on its lid. If I am correct what does it have to do with cleaning the IAC motor? Unless that is just the suggested interval.

Yes MAF is located on the airfilter housing. It is a thin wire. Like IAC cleaning it is a maintenance item.

he's preaching to me... this is the list of my sins.

what product do you clean the MAF with? what will work?
Is is a wire or film type maf on the montero?

Specifically how to clean it?

I think frankR said he removed the "noise filter" thing .
that was a few months ago, I dont really remember.
Judging by the dirt on my noise filter, I would guess the sensor is filthy too

No, not me - as long as the filter element is clean, it passes plenty air for my blower, so it should for any N/A 3.0L SOHC truck engine. It is a good idea to check it and/or replace it if it's dirty... they're fairly inexpensive IIRC.

I will be removing it when I install the MegaSquirt ECU and change to a MAP system to replace the MAF system. The MAF sensor will be removed also, but that's not something you can do unless you're changing engine computers to a MAP system.

OK I think I spotted the wire that Lloyd was refering to..if you look at the "honecomb" portion of the sensor there's what looks like a bare copper wire between two terminals. Mine looked clean and new so I left it alone. Must sense air temp or something. I could see how it might get dirty...

MAFs on most cars are a single (or couple/few wires) positioned vertically between the air filter housing and intake. There's always a plug that usually has one or two wires coming off of it. The wire has current running through it to maintain a constant temp. When air flow across, it raises or lowers the temp of the wire causing a change in the amount of current required to maintain constant temp. ECU senses change and regulates injector fuel input accordingly.
