I followed your instructions, everything seems to be lined up PERFECTLY! but the rotor does not match up with your picture. When I line the rotor up with yours the plastic tab reads it is 15 BTDC. Is this a problem? if so how to I fix it? jeez idunno. are you sure it is set at #1 TDC on compression stroke? then finish up 1989 fsm page 9-80 shows three timing marks- camshafts and crankshaft. The crank mark is about 15 degrees after 0 TDC I want to know the answer too good luck

Use a linoleum knife to split the old belt along its entire length, while still in place (on the pulleys). You now have two half-width belts on the pulleys.
Slip new belt into new position.
No need to check the timing ! smarty-pants

OK, maybe you don't have the "feel" for setting the distributor gears. Try this:
1) Put the engine on TDC (compression stroke) and leave it there.
2) Install the distributor and watch the way the rotor turns as the gears engage during seating.
3) Lift the distributor assembly just enough so you can turn the shaft via the rotor.
4) Guess how much the rotor will turn as the distributor is pushed down to its seat and position the rotor "ahead" of where you think it will end up pointing when seated.
5) Push the assembly into place and see where the rotor points. If it not correct, pull it back up enough to reposition the rotor and try again until you get it pointing in the right spot.

What I'm having a hard time understanding is this: If your just doing a water pump and timing belt job why are you messing around with the distibuter? Assuming the engine was running correctly before the job there's no reason to mess with it unless you took it out. Maybe I'm missing something or you had the distriuter out for another reason..For timing belt replacement you need to worry about both cam sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket like Frank was saying. You may be over complicating things worring about the dizzy..

He may have jumped a tooth on the passenger side cam sprocket.
To check, put the engine on TDC (compression stroke), remove the passenger side cam sprocket cover and see if the sprocket mark is aligned with the mark on the passenger side rear cam cover.

I took pictures of everything. No it does not run which is a problem. ![[Linked Image]](http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/7755/dscn3428fr9.jpg) When I match the rotor with the one Frank posted the crank pulley notch lines up with the 15 mark. I have no idea what is going on with this... Unless I am just a 1st class idiot or something. ![[Linked Image]](http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/1142/dscn3429bd1.jpg)

Anyone ever seen those cam sprockets on an '89 V6 Montero or Raider? They look like they came from a different variant to me.
