I think it means that someone has installed:

1) a Stealth/3000GT SOHC engine
or

2) a pair of Stealth/3000GT heads

Now the questions are how much of what has been installed and how to make it work.

Justice, are you paying attention? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Start by removing the ECU and see what number is stamped on it. The '89 Federal ECU is a #6477.

Wait a minute - I just looked at the FSM and those sprockets appear to be correct. I also pulled the cover off of my engine and it has the same sprockets.

What I've been looking at in the garage for so long is Bob's engine - which has these sprockets:

[Linked Image]

Your sprockets are likely correct and the ones on Bob's engine are possibly incorrect.

So, that leaves me to wonder if you have a spun hub in the crankshaft pulley.

Sorry for the confusion - it's been so long since I saw the insides of my engine, I assumed the one I've been working on had the correct sprockets.

If the crankshaft pulley hub isn't spun, then you've jumped a tooth on the timing belt.

The only way I know to find out is to strip it down again so you can see the timing marks - or remove the crankshaft pulley and compare it to another one - if you have one handy.

the engine ran fine before tearing it down, just a bad water pump. the marks are all lined up, my compression tester shows its on the compression stroke when the marks are lined up. when I crank it over it would act like it wants to start up for a second and immediately die out.

ha my only extra engine is in my Raider 2 hours away. I really need to get this figured out so I can give it back to him soon. Luckily he has a 2nd car to drive while I do this.

It looks to me like you'll have to tear it back down to check the timing marks against the crankshaft sprocket. If they look ok, the problem is the crankshaft pulley hub and you'll need to get a replacement in order to set the timing correctly.

Since it won't start and run, I suspect the belt has jumped a tooth.

I'm not certain how ours are made, but many are press-fit and some have rubber bushings for vibration damping. I haven't heard of a Montero with a spun pulley, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Odds are greater that the belt slipped a tooth on the sprockets and the crankshaft is out of sync with the valves. Did you follow the FSM procedure for installation?
