W/ no vacuum on the FPR, you get maximum fuel pressure all the time, instead of having it lowered at idle. Could be you have marginally low fuel pressure (a pressure gauge would confirm that) or the injectors are clogged up and need the extra pressure to flow enough fuel (a good cleaning would fix that).

Best/easiest way to check fuel pressure??? pull line at cold injector? Could very well be injectors as well since they've been running for >21 years untouched other than gas tank fuel injector cleaner now and then. Tonight, before heading home from work, I'm going to remove the vauum line to the FPR and plug it just to see how well it runs under driving conditions...
