Chris,

Would that be evident if I take off the end cap?

Body Damage is Cool
should be able to know if axle is turning freely w/o wheel off the ground, they should spin when unlocked with wheel stationary, if you cant spin it your locked in...

The hub dial has a pin which orients it, correctly, but i remember putting one on in the wrong orientation, it was obvious it wasnt right after trying to turn it.

Yeah... I just didn't want to crawl up under the truck in my clean clothes and try to turn the shaft with the truck on the ground.

Regarding the pin alignment, the only pin I can think of would be the tabs on the follower that fit into the larger groove of the body. Is that what you're referring to? I verified those are correct. I don't think the cap would mate to the body correctly otherwise.

Here's another guide for the Aisin install that has some good pics. Looks to me like the big spring is reversed in the parts sequence shot. But he may just be showing the general sequence and not the correct orientation.

Here's the service manual pdf for the manual hubs.

Heheh. I see why you said rust after checking your site.

No rust on these rebuilds. They did a nice job.. just left the lube off the cap, it seems.

The service manual (link above) was the only place that I saw mention the big spring has a specific orientation. The pics in the Pirate 4x4 site were the best helping see the correct orientation and placement of the tension spring, clutch and the pawl.

Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

I'm outta town for the next week. If not for that, I'd go buy myself some snap-ring pliers and yank the end cap off to lube the dial this afternoon.

FWIW, when I rebuilt mine the dials were harder to turn (and I know I did it right and lubed it). I think it was because of the fat new o-ring. After a few years they turn pretty easily and smoothly.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for that perspective. I sure had a sore thumb and finger the next day or two after working those hubs back and forth.

Maybe I should just leave them alone.

Nah. I don't think so. I'll have to tinker.

Update... got home after being gone for a week with the truck sitting in the garage the whole time.

Spun the dials and they are much easier to turn now than right after installation. Maybe my fingers got stronger or somethin'. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Think I'll just leave 'em alone and see if they continue to improve like Erik's did.
