Hi Guys,

I am looking at a 87-88 Toyota 1 ton pickup for sale and I was told by the owner and the mechanic of the shop its at it needs an new clutch and the trans rebuilt. I'm sorry but I do not have the trans # and quite honestly I'm not positive what year it is 87 or 88. My question is for those of you that have rebuilt these tranny's would you say its worth it to buy a rebuilt one or do the rebuild yourself. Im not worried about doing the work, 2 years ago I rebuilt the automatic tranny on my 1980 Chevy luv and except for getting it out <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> it went pretty smooth. I think after all was said an done it was about 380 or 4?? in just parts. When I was half way done I saw an ad for a trans place in Southern CA (all they do is rebuilding) that was selling them re manufactured for like 450 or 500 what ever the price was I remember thinking its was worth it. The Toyota is a 4cyl manual and I really don't have many more details I just talked to the guy briefly. I realize there are few different transmissions and I figure the one in here is geared different being that its a 1 ton but I don't know. What I am hoping for is that someone knows of this place in the LA area and can give me a name, I'm about 2hrs from LA. Second, in general, not being familiar with Toyota parts, are the rebuild kits the better way to go rather than re manufactured. I can post more specific info later I just wanted to jump on this because Ive been looking for one of these for a while. At $1800.00 and the need for a new clutch and tranny it might still be a deal, heck the dump alone is worth about 2500.00 Since this is not a 4 X 4 if this is not the place to ask this I apologize, could someone please suggest a good toyota forum. I have a 4x4 trooper and I visit the Trooper forum here so I thought Id see if you guys could help me out here with the Toyota questions.

I don't know for sure, but I think the 1ton should have the R151 tranny?
It should be listed on the dataplate. Pop open the hood, should be dead center on the top of the firewall. Pre '88 anyway. In 88 they moved it to the door jamb.
Those 1ton 2wd trucks are great! They have either 3.90, 4.10, or a few even had 4.30 gears in them.
Is it a single or dually rear?
You mentioned a dumper? so it's a small dump truck then?

Yea its a dually with a big flat bed and metal sides. It belongs to a local landscape company. The bed and hoist, electric (not my favorite) are in very good shape, the rest of the truck looks like well....a work truck form the 80's it is what it is. But these things are very hard to find EVERYBODY wants them, including me. But I'm not going to get into another money hungry project <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> I want one but not that bad. Then again this my be THE ONE.. I'm gonna go by there tomorrow I take a pic.

I 2nd Marlin Crawler they sent me an L52 for my 81 and it is tough!! It's not the same as your trans but I'm sure they do a trans for your year model. www.marlincrawler.com

Nice find, and a 3rd for a Marlin tranny. You'll turn yours in for the core.

If you've overhauled a slushbox <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> you will find a manual overhaul to be a cakewalk. Probably about $200 in kit parts. Not hard to do.
