I've got a leak coming out the front of the cam. What is involved changing it? Do I have to remove the cams?

Thanks

Body Damage is Cool
If its DOHC it appears that you have to remove the cam gears, take off the valve cover (see Axe's instructions on how to change spark plugs) and remove the front cam retainer/bearing cap(s) and then they should pop out. I'm working in my garage finishing up my honey-do list. I'll check it out on the extra head I have and see if it's that way for sure. Will include some pics too. As long as your in there, if you haven't changed plugs and wires, might as well do that, and make sure you change both cams seals. And if you are close to timing belt change, might as well go the rest of the way and do the H2O pump and timing belt.
Pics in about 3 hours.

Well, it looks as if you don't have to remove the valve cover.

YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THIS BLACK PLASTIC COVER THEN THE CAM GEARS,AND MAYBE THE METAL BACK PLATE IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE SEALS AND THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING (DON'T FORGET TO BUY A GASKET).

THEN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE A SHARP PICK AND PULL THE SEALS OUT BECAUSE THEY ARE PRESS FIT INTO THE CAM BEARING END CAP

AS YOU CAN SEE BY THIS PICTURE, THE END CAP SPLITS AND WHEN I TOOK IT APART, THE SEAL JUST PULLED OFF THE END OF THE CAM [Linked Image]

Hope this helps you out. And if your changing the timing belt, belt pulleys, and water pump, go ahead and remove the fan and put on an electric one and then the front of your motor will look like this:

Good luck and hope this helps you out.

I figure the cam seals should be about 2 cocktails (both doubles)

Thanks, Everet. Just what the doctor ordered, cocktails and all!
