Last weekend I was on a trip
and suddenly the central differetial light indicator started flashing without any oparation of the 4WD or any movment of the 4WD stick

we were held up in heavy traffic in a really hot weather and I turned the engine off, after that when i started moving again it started flashing

I checked the 4x4 system and it is working perfectly. Even the Lock And the Low Range.

I found out that when the car is off for a long time the light stays off, after a short distance driving it comes flashing again

this is really annoyying me cuz I have just figured out the front indicators flashing issue

Any help guys will be appreciated

did you do anything to test and verify that the center diff is NOT locked? (like turning tight corners on pavement or something?). Once you have determined that it really is unlocked but light is still flashing, I would check your transfer case oil level and condition. Might not be the problem, but worth a shot. After that you will have to get your hands on a wiring diagram and test and troubleshoot the detection switches on the transfer case, there are quite a few of them.

Yes I did verify that the diff is not locked.

I also went near the beach for a bit beach sand off roading and I Locked the diff and Unlocked it quite easily and almost straight away.

The Oil been in that transfare box quite a long time, maybe over a year and a half, and I was planning to change it very soon like next week or so.
Does the transfare box require a specific Oil or any trans Oil will do??

How hard it is to check those detection switches???
Because Some one at the dealer told me that they are not accessable unless the transmissin and the tarns-box are dropped? is that true??? Cuz honestly I don't belive in the dealer

Thanks alot for your input smile

If the xcase is working but just the indicators are incorrect. I suspect your sensors are not functioning properly. They can and do get dirty and have to be cleaned periodically. I'd start with them. BTW, IIRC, they are located on top of the case. Since you'll have to remove the Xcase to check the actual sensors, I'd first check any wiring connectors since they're probably easier to get access to.

your transfer case just uses gear oil, same as what you put in the diffs. not transmission oil, that is different.

you don't have to remove transmission to get at detection switches, but you would probably have to remove the t-case itself b/c they are mounted on top of the case. if you have a body lift or 2 inches or more, you can squeeze your hands up there and get at the switches, but with stock body mounting, it is very difficult if not impossible to get at them without taking the case down.

OK
This might be a dumb question to ask but here it goes:

Isn't the T-case linked or coupled to the transmission???

In other words: Is it possible to drop/remove the t-case without taking down the transmission??

yes, and yes. it is bolted to the transmission and you do not need to drop the tranny to get the t-case out.

Thaaaaanks a lot Guys for you help

I will attemp the repair this weekend, I will start with the connections first.

One more thing, Could this issue be related to the oil in any way???

Beacuase over the last four days I have noticed that when I start the car at the morning there is no blinking at all, only after driving for 5-10 minutes is starts flashing. and when starting it after a short(i.e. hot) while it blinks instantly!!!

thaanks again guys for your input

So I got under the car and started looking around and checking the transfar box....

I used the help of the service manual I have

I found the three connectors and where they lead

Now I have some more questions:

- What the switches look like????? I have taken pics but I don't know where to upload them to add them to the post.

- How should these switches be changed??

and how can I post the pics to this thread, I don't know where to upload them?
