Finding TDC. #830428 08/12/07 07:23 AM

I've removed the inline fuel pump from my 4BD1T and am now trying to reinstall it.
I've got the crank pulley mark lined up with "T" which I presume is TDC.
I've removed the window on the timing gear cover so I can see the pointer which should line up with the mark on the fuel pump drive gear.

But there exist 2 orientations of TDC. One with cyl #1 on compression, one with cyl #1 finishing exhaust.
I'm betting on #1 at compression being the alignment I want. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I find the fuel pump gear lines up about 1/2 a tooth out. Is this a concern? I'm setting it to the advance side. Is there any other way to confirm TDC on the crankshaft pulley hasn't shifted (say using the dowel on the crankshaft?

Pulling the timing cover is the sure way, but it's a hassle I'd rather avoid.

Body Damage is Cool
HEY DOUGAL, THE KEY WAY ON THE CRANK, SHOULD BE SET AT 12.00 OCLOCK BOTH THE INTAKE AND THE EX VLV SHOULD BE CLOSE
AND THE TIMING MARK ON THE DAMPNER SHOULD BE AT TDC, THIS WILL BE ON NO ONE CYL COMPRESSION, WHEN THE PUMP IS INSTALLED THE MARK ON THE PUMP SHOULD LINE UP PRETTY STRAIGHT, WITH THE MARK ON THE ALUMINUM HOUSING ARROW,THE HALF TOOTH PART IS PROBABLY JUST FROM THE BACKLASH IN ALL THE GEARS, IF YOU ARE OFF BY A FULL TOOTH, YOU CAN TELL EASY THE MARKS WONT COME VERY CLOSE , NOW IF YOU WILL SET THE PUMP EXTERNAL TIMING MARK SLASH ,THIS IS THE UPPER OUTBOARD ATTACHING BOLT WHERE IT IS MARKED , LINE IT UP DEAD ON WITH THE LINE ON THE FRT HOUSING, NOW ROTATE THE PUMP OUTBOARD JUST ENOUGH THAT THE LINE ON THE PUMP ITSELF IS RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE LINE ON THE FRT HOUSING , IN OTHER WORDS IF YOU COULD SLIDE THEM TOWARDS EACH OTHER THE LINE ON THE PUMP WOULD BE UNDER THE LINE ON THE HOUSING , BUT WOULD BE TOUCHING IT AND YOUR TIMING SHOULD BE PRETTY DANG CLOSE , UNLESS YOU THEN WANT TO TAKE APART NO ONE INJ AND DO THE SPILL PORT TIMING PROCEDURE , AND THAT IS KINDA MESSY , JERRY

Thanks for chiming in Jerry.

You're right about the backlash, it lines up square on if I turn the crank the other way.

I can't check the keyway as the front nut is bigger than any sockets I've currently got access to. The engine is out on my garage floor and stripped for cleaning/painting. Just bolting parts back on it now.
Both exh and inlet valves are closed, the dowel on the crank is at 12 o'clock which all makes sense.

However the timing marks on the case (16,12,8, T) are clocked over and the pulley notch lines up with the T. I'm happy with that.

I figure if I was one turn of the fuel pump out, then either inlet, exhaust or both valves would be slightly open.

Cheers
Dougal

It did have me nervous for a while, but it fired up so I must have got it the right way around. The little valve overlap in the turbo cam makes it harder to pick TDC than with a NA engine.

Does anyone know what the maximum allowable exhaust backpressure is?
