I just changed from R12 to R134. I removed the core from the tire valve type low pressure fitting and screwed on the proper R134 fitting. Then with $16 hose and gage, put in a few cans of R134 and a can of lubricant. Works great. The Montero system, even with the chevy compressor, is much colder than the chevy AC.

Hey Bob, did you run a vacuum on the system, or have a shop pull a vacuum on your trucks a/c system before filling it with freon? If not, plan on having someone pull the freon out with a storage/recovery machine, then they'll pull and hold a vacuum on the system for 1/2 hour most likely. This will remove moisture from your A/C system. If you skip this step, corrosion and rust will occur inside the system over time. Anyway, congrats on the conversion, I keep threatening to swap my '92 over, but my R-12 stock system cools so well after replacing the leaking evaporator that I haven't done it yet.

Yeah, did you vacuum it out?
I am running Freeze12 in my 91. Blows nice and cold.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Running an evac on the system is the best way to do it. But, if the the drier is/was in good shape, the dessicant in it will take care of the moisture. I've "retro'ed" a/c's before by purging out the high side whilst filling on the low side.

I never really thought of it. I think it was on Dirty Jobs, they were at a scrap yard, and one of the workers just opened up a ac system.
