Hello.
I have a 1977 jeep CJ5 with a 304, and a 3-speed. The vehicle has some electrical issues: The tail lights don't work, the headlights only work on highbeam, and the fuel gauge does not work. When I look at the fuse box, all the numbers for the fuse sizes have worn off. Also, some of the areas of the fusebox do not seem to have power. Does anyone have a picture or schematic of the fuse box that would tell me what fuse is for what and what rating the fuses should have? Also, if i get an aftermarket fuel gauge, can i assume it will work with the jeep sending unit? thanx dave

First off, it sounds like you need to get a Jeep manual. For the issues you're talking about, I don't think ou need a factory service manual; one of the many aftermarket manuals will do fine, as long as it has wiring schematics in it.
If you get a replacement gauge from someplace that specializes in Jeeps, and tell them the year and model of your Jeep, they should be able to provide you with a gauge that will fit and will be electrically compatible with your rig. Some of the larger places are: Four Wheel Drive Hardware; Quadratec; and Jeeperz Creeperz. You can Google any of them and get their phone numbers or look a their online catalogs.

Us 77 boys will stick together. PM me or post your email and I will scan as much of my FSM wiring diagram at or about the fuse box area and send it to ya. Have you checked the bulbs? I bought a truck once that had no low beams. Thought it was the dimmer switch on the floorboard but both headlight low beams were burnt out. Follow the rear harness from the fuse box , along the left interior side to where it drops thru to the rear exterior to the tails. Its common in older jeeps to have had someone hack it up for one reason or another especially trailer wiring. If it has trailer wiring hacked in, think about removing it til you diagnose the problem..

oh yeah and on the sending unit, check the ground wire on top of the tank, it may be corroded. There are two main suppliers of Jeep Repro parts, Omix-ADA and Crown, both sold by the folks Bob suggested. I know the Omix sending unit requires some fiddling with the float rod to get it right. The original was from Stewart Warner but I dont know where you might find one of them. Good Luck

Bad grounds. they cause all kinds of problems with CJ wires, If you have the blade style fuses they are also color coded, each color is a certain amperage.

Thanx for your input. I have solved the tail light problem. I didn't even think that both headlights could have blown, I will check. As far as the wiring diagram (oldgreen) it would be awesome to get that from you. I have a Haynes manual, and the wiring schematics are useless, It shows a fusebox, but I can't read it and none of the wires actually connect to anything (on the picture). I guess I'm looking to get or buy a completed wiring diagram as I'm sure this is not the last problem I will have.
