I've noticed a few folks here had an ABS light that won't go off, yet no resolution was ever posted about what the culprit turned out to be.

I've got one. It started about 2 months ago. I poked around here in The Wire, and saw the post about possible cause was corroded terminals, clamps, etc in on battery, so I replaced those. Nothing.

Put new brakes on the truck this weekend, since it needed it. Light still on.

Driving to work today, had the chance to go ahead and try to lock 'em up (slightly wet pavement from rain) and sure enough, ABS never kicked in.

So, having DL'ed the FSM, I see where it says to use the SST or a jumper wire.

Question #1:
I assume this is like in the GM's where you could jump the ecu data cable port with a paper clip and read the check engine light codes, right? Will the ScanGuageII do the same thing? PERFECT justification with the wife to dump $160 on something NOT for her

Question #2
Is anyone who posted the problems still around? If so, please let me know what happened!

Question #3
Is this something I could fix, or what? Keep in mind that I am an automotive IDIOT!

Obvious stuff, check the fuse, check the electrical plugs, etc.

PM john lutrell, IIRC he had an ABS issue.

Checked fuse and connection under hood- all was good and tight, clean too.

Stop by AutoZone on the way home, and dude said his box won't read ABS codes, but he tried it anyway. It read no codes.

Is the tire pressure identical in all tires? Is the amount of tire tread very similar on all tires?

Yes, and yes. Recently rotated and balanced...just last weekend.

When the ABS light is not on, the ABS works. I tried last night. When it is on, it apparently shuts off the system. Tried that this morning.

I read in the FSM that the light can be reset pretty easily. I might try THAT, and if it comes back on, then do some more in depth trouble shooting. Wife is leaving for the weekend, so that gives me plenty of time to work on MY 'Richie-do' list.

A few years back my mom had the ABS light on her Regal come on. The garage told her they could either fix some fancy computerized pulse something or other for about $500, or she could leave it alone and have old fashioned non-antilock brakes.

I guess my point is, with the light on, you may not be having any brake problems or anything, but at the moment you probably don't have ABS anymore.

Doah! Reread your original post, I guess you already knew you didn't have ABS anymore. I'll add though, she drove it with the light on for about 2 years until she traded it in.

Well- tonight, coming home from work, the light was on.

I let it sit for a while, then started it up, and the light was still on.

I unhooked the wire harness for ABS controller, and sprayed it all down with electronics cleaner.

The light wasn't on when I drove to the gym, and on the way home, I took the long way and no light.

We'll just have to wait and see.

This morning- no light.

That is until I was going over a 3 track railroad crossing, and as I exited the 3rd track, sure enough, Mr. Annoying made a retrun visit.

Finally got a code last night. Left front speed sensor is bad. Woo hoo!

Bad part- $193 for a replacement. Should get it tomorrow, and will slap it on tomorrow night.

Before you go plunkin' down money, you'd better inspect that harness down there first.
