I think the OEM birfields are heat treated, I recall my old ones were. I think that was done to harden the steel to make them last longer, as far as wear goes. One of the things the upgraded birfs do is to anneal the steel to soften it and make it stronger and less likely to fracture under high loads. DOwnside is that the softer steel is more prone to wear.
