Are you sure its a '78? Not a '79? The first factory 4x4 was in '79. It could be a 78 model that was converted to 4x4 by aftermarket companies using dana parts.

Well, to be more specific, if the mfr date was 8/78 to 12/78, it's a 79, or like some folks say, a 78.5 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
Didn't have VINs on them yet either. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

The production date on the I.D. tag is August 77. I can give the VIN # if it will help. It doesn't look like anything has been altered, as for as mounting is concerned.

You can check out Marlin's transmission ID page:

Not sure of the model information plate on that early of a truck would have the trans. info, but worth a look:

And while I wish Marlin were located in Fremont (20 min away from me), he is actually in Fresno CA (3 hr. drive).

Thank you, I went to Marlin Transmission page. It appears that my transmission is a early L43 4-speed..... Ordered the parts and now can not wait for them to get here.
Thanks again!
