Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well i havent really introduced myself but im Bob i just moved to West Haven utah and picked up a $400 dollar 86 montero. I bought it off craigs list non running needing a battery and carb tinkering. I was told it doesnt run because the carb needs adjusting. The truck has 157k miles on it and some rust but overall in decent shape. I picked up a battery today and tryed to start it but nothing at all just turned over. so i check fuel and spark was fine and timing was good too i couldnt figure it out. So after reading through the haynes manual i got with the truck i figured out the guy had all the plug wires on wrong. so after i corrected that it fired up quick and idled steady at about 1k rpms. I drove i t around the block and it didnt stall or anything and pulled decent up to about 4k rpms but wont go passed that. Theres a strange rattle noise comming from somewhere too not sure if its engine related or what so i took a video and hope someone here can enlighten me. Theres some heat shield or skid plate that rattles off and on too. But let me know what u think.

If the vehicle has not been run or was missfiring you might have a partially plugged cat convertor which would "choke" out the engine operation (restricting air out which restricts the amount of air able to flow in) acting like a governor. That noise you here might be the insides of the covertor banging around in there as it gets hit and moved by the exhaust trying to find it's way through.

Check the vac actuator for the second carb barrel. On the pass. side rear of carb. Silver flying saucer. See if it holds vac.

Ewwwwwww, rust holes.

I dont know anything about the carb 4 bangers so I cant help you. But it is awesome that all that it needed was plug wires switched. Oh yeah, welcome.

about a 25-50 dollar tool. called a hand vacuum pump, should be one at an autoparts store somewhere. Mityvac is a brand name of this tool.

you might check it with the hose to your mouth first, but really I think you find alot of uses for a vac pump, it's a good thing to have.

Thats the sound of timing chain slap. Did the oil pressure ever come up? The oil pressure has to come up to supply pressure to the timing chain guide. Or the timing chain guides are warn out and it's gone metal to metal.

there is no oil pressure guage so im now sure about the oil pressure, the oil light isnt on just the Check EGR. Is it a pain in the ass to change the timing chain?
