Push down to tension the chain. Rotate the crank pulley a little clockwise (by hand) before you press down on the pin (that way all the chain slack will be at the adjusting guide. Don't go nuts pressing down on the thing real hard. There is supposed to be some slack/clearance. I would press down to take up all slack then back off the pressure to tighten the bolt.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
ok heres the verdict, I loosened the bolt and pushed down very lightly and it went almost all the way to the bottom so i tightned the bolt, applied a small amount of RTV to the cover and bolted it back on while i was waiting for the rtv to seal up i pulled the EGR Valve off because the EGR Light is on and this is what i got.

[Linked Image]

I cleaned it as best i could on the valve and the flange it bolts to, pretty bad really. I put it all back together, tightened up the silent shaft cover and fired it up. No more noise!! It idles a bit choppy still and the EGR light is still on but its no longer rattling demons around. I think i hear a leak on the Exhaust manifold somewhere but other then those it seems to run ok. I drove it about a mile giving it a good 5k rpms before shifting, i get some blue smoke one and awhile but im thinking its just left overs from sitting * I hope * Thank you tons for your help! Now i need to figure out why the wipers and four-ways arnt working

The "CHECK EGR" light is controlled by the odometer. It is NOT a indicator of any problem with the ERG system but a reminder to have the ERG system checked. There is a reset switch on the back of the instrument cluster to reset the light. If you remove the top cover of the instrument cluster by pulling up on the cover it it should pop off.

The find the reset switch and slide it to the opposite side that it is currently on and you should be good to go. If you seach this forum for "egr check light reset" you will find a more detailed description if you have a problem locationing the switch.
Also this forum is a one of the best sources of information and help for you Montero on the web.
hope this helps...
good luck

You can also remove the bulb to keep it from coming back on later. Like Cirrus said, it comes on by mileage, usually 50k increments. The later Monty's have a "Maint Reqd" light in it's place. I took the bulb out, cause I'm not a tard and I know when something needs to checked

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Nice work folks! Bob: welcome, and rest assured you are in good hands! Did you put in that new oil yet? If so, any difference? Aside from the rusty fender it looks in pretty good shape, esp considering what you paid.

yea full oil change done to it. sounds good now all previous noises are gone, but im hearing what sounds like a slight exhaust manifold leak.. not sure though. She still idles a bit rough and bouncy sometimes when comming to a stop she idles down and dies but starts back up and keeps on trucking, also when its at a light throttle i can feel it kinda cut out a bit and then i give it more gas and it accelerates normal, any idea what might cause that?
