2001 XJ. Kids were playing in it for about an hour last night, using radio, headlights, etc. Engine not on. When it was turned on next it cranked fine, then died. Cranked again fine, died afer two blocks. Did this two more times. Now seems to be running fine, like it never happened. Alternator? Although I would think if the alt. was going south it would run off the battery till the battery died.

Body Damage is Cool
Were the kids only playing in the passenger compartment, or did they have access to the engine compartment?

They were in the passenger compartment. They have no interest in what's under the hood.

bump. It's doing it again...this time when the radio had been left on for maybe 10-15 min. with the engine off. That shouldn't have taken much juice...then it cranked fine and died, cranked again, drove a bit, and died, then again and stayed running. I really don't get it.

Dang gremlins!!

Sounds like maybe a loose connection somewhere. Have you checked your wiring at all? Not sure which wires should be checked, but thats what the prob sounds like to me.

Gun it and run it!

Have you checked the battery??

I have seen some real strange problems cured by replacing the battery......

Actually I haven't. Cleaned contacts - not that they needed it. But the battery had enough juice to crank it with no problem even when it kept dying after starting and running. Maybe I'll have the GF run it by Autozone tomorrow. I've seen dying bats have strange effects too...
