Thanks to everybody for helping me find the transmission parts that I needed, But now I am trying to find various other parts. All the parts stores I go to, they tell me that their books (computers) only list parts from 79 on. My truck has a production date of 09/77, what's up with that?

It's with the presumption that everything has gone to the crusher I guess. Plus TX isn't Toyota country compared to the PNW or Alaska. Your other resource is fleabay and

www.car-part.com

We still have a couple 20R guys floating around here, and a few of us with 1st gens up to 83.

Your right there......All the trucks down here are pretty much the biggerthe better. My main truck is a 1999 chevy 3500 4x4 crew cab, but I ran across this '78 that has been abused and neglected. Bought it for $ 250.00 got it running with new gas and little cleaning, but still need to rebuild the transmision,( when the parts get here).

I know it does not get as cold here as it does in Fairbanks but there is a stretch "about 4-5 days" in the winter that a person would like to turn their heater on. You know 50 degrees is PD cold. Ha. Ha.

I guess the parts break is right there between 78 and 79? Where anything 79 and above won't interchange?

Depends on what the parts are. I discovered with the 20R that there's a few things that will swap over as a bolt-on from the 22R as long as it's pre-83, as this is also where the alternator has an exterior voltage regulator.

Hah- 50dg is still tshirt weather. Ya figure if you can shoot paint or sealant down to +40 yer good to go.
I BBQ until around -20 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

LINKY ask and you shall receive!!

Roll Me Over
As far as I know, '79 was the first year of the Toyota 4x4 in the U.S., you could have a converted 2x, or a '77 body/interior on a '79-'83 frame. If it is a factory 4x4 it should fall under the '79 model year, the production date could be 09/77, but its model date could be the '79. My '90 has a production date of 12/89, and my '91 has a production date of 1/90, production date doesn't alwasy correspond to model date. If it is registered as a '78, some dealers may have gotten demo models prior to them going on sale as the '79 model year release.

If it is a factory 4x4, you should be able to use '79 parts, if it is a conversion/cab swap you should have better luck requesting parts if you say you have a '78 2wd rather than a '78 4x, and only mention that it is a '79 4x when requesting parts for the drivetrain.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
