Getting the Wheeling Fever

Having a problem with my wife's '99 Wrangler tranny. It's slipping when I put it into drive from a dead stop. It as got to the point where it slips going down the road now and also sometimes when I back out of the driveway. I'm looking at replacing the torque converter because that's where I think the problem lies. So I have a couple of questions regarding this. I've never replaced one so what other than the new torque converter do I need? Extra tranny fluid I'm guessing and how do I fill that converter before putting it in? I also plan on replacing the rear main seal since the tranny will be out of the way. I don't have a manual yet for this vehical so any help would be appreciated. Tips, what to look out for, warnings and so forth. Thanks in advance, Carl

Howdy Carl Have you installed a new tranny filter? That would be my first endeavor. If the Filter has seen a few months I'd be pulling it and spending some time looking at it before installing a new one. Tranny filters sure cause a lot of tranny slipping.
Son's GF had a TOYota that was overheating... She kept adding water and the tranny fluid COOKED in the radiator. Neither he nor she mentioned it to me untill the thing QUIT on her.. I had to put 3 new filters in it before the system got clean enough to keep itself on the road.. It ran for several years after getting the fluid cleaned up. You know now that you mention it I have had to add water here and there to the radiator. I also remember seeing what looked like steam coming from the dip stick tube after driving it. I just thought it was because of the slipping it was getting hot. Maybe I should spend the money on a new radiator then get some filters.

Thought I would report back and let you know how things turned out. First of all thanks to Big Jim , I changed the fluid and filter once and the slipping went away . I still feel a little happening but nothing like what it was doing. I plan on changing them at least one more time and all should be good. Thanks again, Carl
