Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 90 Montero has left me stranded again. She turns over just fine but when I remove one of the spark plug wires while trying to start herà.no spark. Then I removed the short wire to the coil, still no spark. What is the resistance of the coil? And what is the input voltage to the coil and where does it come from? Are there any other checks I can do to isolate this problem?

Thanks,
Pat

+12v is supplied to the coil primary winding via the key switch. Primary resistance should be .72-.88 ohms. Secondary resistance as measured between the coil + primary blade and the high voltage secondary connector should be 103-13.9k ohms (k = 1000). The blades of the primary connector are oriented like the letter "T". The positive blade is the vertical part of the letter "T".

Other suspects are the power transistor and the ECU.

It is your ECU. My 90 did the same thing last month. http://www.avproecm.com/ $150 + shipping. Will start right up and run great! Dont even think about looking at anything else. I spent two days changing everything else.

By the way, a simple test to see if it's your ecu is to turn the key and if your check engine light does not come on, then it's the ecu.

I got lucky carbonbody. It was the Coil. All the posting in the world doesn't help until I went out and actually tried to fix it. I stil have some terrible tapping on the drivers side that doesn't go away.

You sure did get lucky! I carry a spare coil & distributor now...and will carry an extra ecu if i ever find one cheap. The ticking was horrible in my '90. I could never get it go to away for good. Marvels Mystery oil helped for awhile. Finally went away after changing my engine.

Piston slap is caused by worn or collapsed piston skirt. Rebuild.
