Well for those who don;t know I'm in the middle of putting a 4D56 (2.3 turbo diesel) into my '85 Pickup. Fairly straight forward so far, just working on electrical and other little things right now.

Supposedly, it will bolt straight in using the original Montero motor mounts and the original clutch setup ( not sure if this is the Ranger flywheel, pressure plate, etc. or the Montero one). It doesn't seem this way in my case.

Since I am doing the swap on a pickup, I have a cable clutch rather than the hydraulic setup. The ranger had a hydraulic setup, so the pressure plate and flywheel are too thick to go into my transmission. I would use the Mitsu setup I have, but the flywheel is a good bit lighter and the diesel starter won't reach to engage the starter ring. The motor mounts don't look like they will work either, although I thought they were the same between the pickup and Montero.

Long story short, I need someone with access to CAPS to help me get a lot of part numbers, since the Dodge dealer isn't being helpful and the nearest Mitsu dealer is an hour away.

I need numbers for:

-1985 Mighty Max SP with a 2.6 (VIN JA7FK44E9FP405112)
Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, throwout bearing, motor mounts

-1985 Mitsubishi Mighty Max SP with 2.3 4d56 (sorry, no VIN)
Starter motor,Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, throwout bearing, motor mounts

-1985 Montero (or any other 1st gen w/ 2.6, again no VIN)
Motor Mounts

Thank you so much for any help, and sorry for the insanely long post.

there is a way to get the caps access for yourself. I dont recall where it was, maybe here: http://www.stealth316.com/0-frames.htm

It was too compilicated for me. You need to have some computer slills.

It sounds like you only need to rebuild the starter to fit
?

CAPS is available on the Outerlimits4x4 forum. Search U/N Bitsamissin.

I have a paper copy of the 1983 Dodge Import Parts manual. I'll be happy to look up the part numbers if you think the 1983 parts will work.

If you can look up the part numbers for the diesel that would be really great. I downloaded CAPS and was able to find all the relevant 2.6 part numbers, but could use the diesel ones to compare.

All I would need is the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate ("clutch cover" or something like that in CAPS), throwout bearing, motor mounts, and starter motor for the 4d55 equipped diesel. Thanks a bunch,
Dylan

The only items different between the 2WD and 4WD trucks seems to be rear engine mounts and the transfer case support.

You said in your original post you were putting in a 4D56... did you mean a 4D55 (2.3) or a 4D56 (2.5)? Just wondering as this can have a profound effect on what parts you use...

just a typo... it's definitely the 4d55 (2.3l) from the Ford Ranger. Sorry for the mixup.

Hi Dylan,

I'm planning on using the Ford Ranger flywheel, Ford Ranger clutch and release bearing on the '87 Mitsubishi Montero 5 speed manual truck when I put the 4D55T in. From what I can tell, it looks like it will all fit and I can use the HD starter from the Ford Ranger diesel as well. I'm also using the stock montero motor mounts and swapping the motor mount brackets from the 2.6 engine to my 4D55 block. It looks like that will fit as well.

Am I missing something? It sounds like you're thinking that won't work on your pickup. Do you have the KM145 5 speed in your truck? Let me know what you've found because I sure would hate to put this thing all together and have clutch fit problems!

Thanks,

Pmontero

P.S. - you'll probably need the pilot bearing part number for the flywheel as well.
