Body Damage is Cool
I have done that several times, 85 4Runner. T-case attached also. Easier in my opinion.

As far as the length of the unit and angle to get it into the engine compartment and under the firewall, do I have to get the truck pretty high off the ground?

I did not have to lift my 87 at all to install the entire drivetrain as a single unit... But it was also sitting on 33's w/3" BL.

You might need to lift it a little, but it won't be much.

You will want to remove the hood to install it as one unit, you shouldn't have to lift the vehicle at all. If you have a body lift it will be easier either way, either as a unit or by the piece. However, w/o a BL the upper bell housing bolts is a PITA when installing the tranny, though it still can be done.

Maybe I should back up here...I may be making some incorrect assumptions. The big picture: I am swapping engines. The tranny in the truck is ok. Based on my past experience with trying to wrestle the tranny/xfer in after a clutch job, I am thinking it would be easier to pull both out as a unit, or individually, then bolt the tranny to the good engine and install as a unit. I am assuming it would be easier than leaving the tranny in and trying to mate the new engine to it. What do you think?

I concur. Replace engine/trans/transfer as 1 unit.
Drop the trans/transfer as 1 unit with a floor jack. I leave the cross member attached. It is a good lever:D
Good time to clean engine bay and transmission
Assemble all together and install!
You will have to remove the cross member for obvious reasons
Easy and you'll see when you do it!
So do it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Toyrunner: You mention above pulling tranny/ xfer out from bottom.
What is the advantage of not pulling engine/trannt/xfer out as a unit? Thanks.
