howdi all. I have a query for all you well travelled 4x4ers. How does a ford bronco compare to a toy truck for offroad ability? Reason I ask is that Iĺl be coming into a bit of money soon and I?ve always loved the Broncos/F trucks. I?m a die hard Ford fan thru and thru but ended up with a yota thru limited finances and a need to go offroad.

So are the broncos any good off road, or are they a big heavy lump of crud that bog down in the tiniest bit of sand?

Sorry... shoulda clarified things a bit better first. I?m looking at around the early 80 models. The later model ones are pretty rare around here. Actually they?re all pretty rare over here, but like the older ones.

I agree with DRTDEVL, the early generations are by far the best (of corse I'm sort of biased ). I believe there are WAY more parts available for just about any Toyota compared to the generation of Bronco/truck you're thinking of. May be different down there though.

I'd say a Toyota would be better offroad due to the fact that a 80's big bronco won't fit on half the trails a Toyota would. They are pretty good trucks, just BIG

Wait...I was thinking 78-79 big bronco. The early 80's are the TTB trucks right? If so, I don't think they are as good as the earlier trucks. My cousin had one and it was junk.

It isn't by accident that Toyota's are so popular as a back country vehicle all over the world, it certainly wasn't because they were sold cheaper than other auto makers vehicles.

Do you see many full size vehicles out in the back country?, if not it is probably because they don't do well. Granted you can over come the short commings of having a heavy rig by fitting it with large wide tires, such as some 36x14.50's. However, for the price it is going to cost to get the Bronco capable with larger tires, gears, stronger axle and a lift kit to clear the larg meats, you could build a virtually unstoppable Yota.

Being a fan of a particular style rig is hard to get away from, and it will be hard for anyone to talk you out of it. I think if you really want one, get it, drive it to work, try wheeling it and see if it will work for you, only you can know for sure, however, don't sell the Yota until you know for sure the Ford is going to work out for you.

This of course only applies to all Broco's but the original. The only down side to the original bronco is that it is a heavy rig with a 3-spd tranny in its stock form. They can be nice classic dependable rig when properly built, or an anoyingly unreliable rig when built wrong. A wheeling associate of mine has the latter version.

If you have to sell the Yota to help fund the Ford, you should probably wait, unless it is a deal of lifetime. I have a couple of friends who have sold their Yota's for their favorite full size 4x, wheel the full size once or twice and quickly sell it to get antother Yota, and end up loosing a lot money in the process.

you show me any other half ton truck that can take what a toyota can.,, yep a mini half ton. my toyota can hall twice the weight of my half ton dodge. the toy is an 85 the dodge is a 98... the toy has a 4 cylinder and the dodge a 318.
I have owned and built, chevy, ford, dodge,, I own 2 awesome rock crawling toyota's...

Thanks for the input guys. I had no intention to sell my toy to fund it, was just gonna get a second rig. My wife told me when I first mentioned getting another rig that I should spend the money on my toy and have a really good 4x4. I can see her point but I guess I?m just your typical aussie bloke.. i want a big V8 that chews through 1/2 my pay check in fuel each week. Iĺl give it soome more thought before I commit to anything.

Hey Rusty...I also love the older style f-trucks, tough as nails, look great, the Bronco would be my ideal truck, but it will never happen cause they are too damn wide!
The areas we like to roar around the bush in are pretty overgrown, GU Patrols rub both sides of the brush, but my Hilux slips thru like a ninja! Send a Bronco thru first, you could race 2 Hilux's side by side.
Very wide in the arse.
