Getting the Wheeling Fever

Well i got back from Oregon today and decided to go check the timing on the Gen 1 to see if its set where its supposed to be because my idle is alittle unstable at times and i can hear it pinging. So i hooked up my gun and fired up the rig and my light doesnt come on so i triple checked all my hook ups and try again and it flashed once and then would flash randomly about 20-30 seconds apart. So i think my gun is faulty so to test it i hooked it up to the coil, and it flashed rapidly, so the gun works yea? so i hook it up the the #1 plug again and still just a flash every so often. So i try hooking it to the #1 spot on the Dissy cap and it does the same thing. so after awhile i figure out that when the motors idle drops down to almost a stall the light works fine but as soon as the rpms start to come back up the light stops working and only flashes when the idle drops a bit and just before stall again it works like it should. So i try to adjust timing with my head listening to see if the engine runs any better and when its set at TDC and the rotor sitting at #1 i mark the setting on the dissy and start to adjust it but as soon as i move it alittle it quickly loses all will to live and starts to sputter out so i set it back to where i started. Now i can only turn it one way because its all the way up to make rotor set as close to #1 as it can. So im wondering if my dissy needs to be rotated 180? so i can try to adjust the opposite way or what? Im not sure where to go from here but i need to get rid of the pinging before i make it a DD. Can someone help me out here?

I had a similar problem on my old G54B 2.6. and my distributor was 180 out. its worth a try!!! what do you have to lose???? check the plug wires aswell!!!! maybe that wire has gone bad!

If it runs at all, I don't think it's 180* out. Maybe one notch. Do a search for my user name and dizzy install for a complete description.
And I'd suspect the rotor/cap for cracks/tracks as well as a timing issue, or a bad (going) coil that's not outputting enough juice.
