Getting the Wheeling Fever
What is the best way to shift from 4L to 4H? I was in climbing in 4L for a while and after it flattened out, I completley stopped, shifted the tranny to "N" then the 4x4 lever to "N" , paused for a moment, it wanted to grind slightly as I pulled it into 4H. Seemed to want to grind as I went back to 4L. Eventually is went into 4H and back to 2wd w/ no problem. I don't always get this result, but it has happened every once in a while.
Any thoughts?

If I am not /extremely/ careful, my transfer case will grind. It is less likely to do this going from 4L to 4H. So, I stop completely when shifting it and if it won't move I just have to move the truck a hair.

I'm pretty sure the synchros in my transfer case are shot. This could be why.

Out of 4L to 4H, I just clutch it and shift out while rolling and usually drop down a gear or two on the transmission to keep up with the engine in a quick 1,2 kind of motion. Or I stop, shift out of L, shift out of H.

H is the crankier of the positions. I often have to be rolling <30 or jog the truck back and forth a time or two to go from 4H to 2L.

4H into 4L, 9 times out of 10 I stop, and once in a great while I'll engage Lo at <5 mph and haven't had any problem. I always have the clutch in or the rig otherwise in neutral, though.

So long as my hubs are locked in I can shift to 4H and I have done it doing about 40mph. The card in the visor says no more than 50mph btw.

I always stop, put the vehicle in N then change to 4Lo though. No grinding unless I am in drive or rolling.

Usedtacould. As it aged I found that I really needed to coast below 50 to get into 4H smoothly and coast below 45 to get out. With the SAS and crazy angles going on now, 35 is about as fast as I dare to go while throwing the little lever. Always, though, foot off the gas to move between L&H, H&L.

I've noticed that occasionally, my gears will grind when shifting from 4L into 4H.. even at a dead stop and the auto in Neutral. Doesn't always.. but sometimes. Always from a stop and tranny in N. I've never noticed the grinding shifting 4H to 4L or 2H to 4H, only going 4L to 4H.

seems like speed lever has the exact same problem as me. I can't attribute this to wear and tear, since I don't use 4L that often. Can any one explain the way the syncros/parts/etc. work to allow for a smooth shift?

There are no synchros between hi/lo, so that explains some of it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
There is a synchro to shift from 2wd to 4wd though, to get the front drive shaft spinning before the ADD engages.

Seems like its the guys w/ auto trannys that have the problem. I wonder if the shift linkage for the tranny could use some adjustment? Or maybe you're just not waiting long enough for the spinning parts to slow down and stop?

I dunno I have no issues myself, I do have manual hubs though.

I have manual hubs and auto tranny and the problem as mentioned. It occurred this weekend too. Sitting at idle and shifting from 4L to 4H... I can hold it just off the 4H mark and hear the gears just lightly grinding. The spinning doesn't seem to be slowing either. So it's not a time issue.
